Pool Surround Pavers: Slip, Heat and Pool Water

For a pool surround, choose a paver with a textured surface for grip when wet, in a lighter colour so it stays comfortable under bare feet, and lay it sloping away from the pool. This guide covers slip, heat, pool water and laying, and lists our outdoor paving designs.

What should you look for in a pool surround paver?

    What mattersWhat to chooseWhy
SlipA textured surfaceThe surround is wet and people walk on it barefoot
HeatA lighter colourDark paving takes in more heat in full sun
Pool waterA surface you can rinse and scrubSplashed water dries and leaves marks
DrainageA slight slope away from the poolWater should run off, not sit or flow back in

How do you stop a pool surround being slippery?

Start with the surface. A textured paver gives wet, bare feet something to grip; smooth and polished finishes do not. Then keep it clean. Algae grows quickly on paving that stays damp, and it makes any surface slippery. Our guide to cleaning moss and algae off pavers explains how to remove it.

In our range, Square (8 * 8) IN is made as a high-grip design.

Do pavers get hot around a pool?

Any paving in full sun warms up, and in Sri Lanka the sun is strong all year. Lighter colours take in less heat than dark ones, so choose a light paver where people will walk barefoot. Shade from a tree, a wall or a pergola helps more than any choice of paver.

Does chlorine or salt water damage pavers?

Pool water splashes onto the surround every time the pool is used, then dries. Over time that can leave marks. Rinse the surround with fresh water from time to time, and wash it with a mild detergent when it needs it. Avoid harsh chemicals.

How should a pool surround be laid?

    • Slope it away from the pool. Water should drain to the garden or a drain, not sit on the paving or run back into the pool.
    • Compact the ground properly. Soil dug out and put back around a new pool settles. Paving laid on it too soon sinks with it.
    • Finish the edge. The paving needs a firm edge at the pool and at the garden, so the blocks cannot creep.

Because pavers are individual blocks, a section can be lifted and laid again if the ground settles or a pipe needs repair. See how interlock pavers are installed.

    Frequently asked questions

What makes a paver suitable for a pool surround?

Grip when wet comes first: choose a textured surface, not a smooth or polished one. After that, a lighter colour stays more comfortable under bare feet, and the surface should slope away from the pool so water drains off.

Are pavers slippery around a pool?

A textured paver gives bare feet something to grip. Smooth and polished surfaces are the ones to avoid. Any surface becomes slippery once algae grows on it, so keep the surround clean.

Does chlorine or salt water damage pavers?

Splashed pool water dries on the surface and can leave marks over time. Rinsing the surround with fresh water from time to time keeps it clean.
