Pavers in Sri Lanka: Types, Uses and Maintenance

Pavers are individual paving units laid to form driveways, pathways and patios. In Sri Lanka they have to cope with monsoon rain, strong sun and high humidity. This guide covers the three main types, where each one works best, and how to maintain them.

Why use pavers in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka's climate is hard on outdoor surfaces. Our pavers are designed to withstand:

    • Intense monsoon rain
    • Prolonged exposure to UV rays
    • High humidity
    • Temperature fluctuations

Traditional concrete surfaces can crack and fade over time. Our eco-friendly pavers keep their appearance and structural integrity for decades with minimal maintenance.

What types of pavers are available in Sri Lanka?

There are three main types. Which one you need depends on the traffic the surface will carry.

    TypeBest forKey property
Standard paversResidential driveways, pathways and patiosAvailable in various sizes, colors and textures, and laid in many patterns
Interlocking paversCommercial parking lots, public walkways, commercial courtyards and driveways with heavy vehicle trafficThe interlocking design gives superior stability and load-bearing capacity
Grass paversSustainable landscaping, for vehicles and foot trafficGrass grows through the paver; rainwater is absorbed, which reduces runoff and the heat island effect

We cover two of these in more depth: read our guides to interlock pavers and grass pavers.

What designs do pavers come in?

    • Classic rectangular patterns
    • Modern geometric designs
    • Natural stone-like textures
    • Custom patterns to match the architecture

    How do you maintain pavers?

    1. Clean regularly. Sweep away debris and wash with a mild detergent as needed.
    2. Prevent weeds. Apply a weed prevention treatment between the pavers.
    3. Seal. Consider a sealer every 2 to 3 years to enhance the color and protect against stains.
    4. Repair promptly. Fix damaged or loose pavers early to prevent further problems.

    Are pavers worth the cost?

Quality pavers can cost more at the start than basic alternatives. The return comes over time:

    • A longer lifespan with minimal maintenance
    • Fewer repairs and replacements
    • Increased property value
    • A look that does not date

    Frequently asked questions

Which type of paver is best for a driveway?

Standard pavers suit residential driveways. For driveways with heavy vehicle traffic, interlocking pavers are the better choice: the interlocking design gives more stability and load-bearing capacity.

How often should pavers be sealed?

Consider applying a sealer every 2 to 3 years. Sealing enhances the color and protects against stains.

Do pavers cope with Sri Lanka's monsoon?

Our pavers are designed to withstand intense monsoon rain, prolonged UV exposure, high humidity and temperature fluctuations. Grass pavers also let rainwater soak into the ground, which reduces runoff.

Do pavers cost more than basic paving?

Quality pavers can cost more at the start than basic alternatives. They last longer with minimal maintenance, need fewer repairs and replacements, and add to property value.
